CLOCKSPRING Centering

CAUTION: If rotating part of clockspring is not positioned properly with steering column and front wheels, clockspring failure may result. Use following procedure to center clockspring.
  1. Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Position wheels in straight-ahead position. Remove driver-side air bag and steering wheel. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG & STEERING WHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Depress 2 plastic auto-locking tabs to release locking mechanism. See Figure .
  3. Keeping locking mechanism disengaged, rotate clockspring rotor clockwise to end of its travel. DO NOT  apply excessive torque. From end of its travel, rotate rotor 2 1/2 turns in counterclockwise direction.
  4. Horn wire should end up at top and air bag module wire (squib wire) at bottom. See Figure . Engage clockspring locking mechanism. Install steering wheel and air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG & STEERING WHEEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  .
  5. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . DO NOT  connect negative battery cable at this time. Perform system operation check to ensure system is functioning properly. See TESTING - SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
