Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

- Remove valve cover and curtain. If camshaft sprocket is to be removed, use Sprocket Holder (C-4687) and Adapter(C-4687-1) to hold camshaft sprocket and remove sprocket bolt. See Figure. Remove camshaft sprocket. Support timing belt and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Fig. Figure.
- Using Intermediate Shaft/Camshaft Seal Remover (C-4679), remove camshaft seal. See Figure. Place reference mark on rocker arm for installation reference.
- Note that arrow on camshaft bearing caps is toward camshaft sprocket and camshaft bearing caps are numbered for location with No. 1 at timing belt end of engine. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts several turns in proper sequence. See Figure.
- Using soft-faced mallet, tap rear of camshaft to loosen camshaft bearing caps. Remove bolts, camshaft bearing caps and camshaft. Remove rocker arms (if necessary).
CAUTION:
Camshaft bearing cap bolts must be removed in sequence or camshaft may bind in cylinder head, damaging camshaft or bearing thrust surfaces.
