Removal (Carrier Assembly & Balance Shafts)

  1. Following components will remain intact during carrier assembly removal: gear cover, gears, balance shafts and rear cover.
  2. Remove oil pan and oil pick-up tube. See OIL PAN  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using Crankshaft Sprocket Puller/Installer (C-4685) and puller insert, remove crankshaft sprocket. See Figure. Remove crankshaft seal retainer.
  4. Remove chain cover. Remove balance shaft sprocket bolt. Loosen tensioner pivot and adjusting bolts. Move chain-driven balance shaft inboard through chain sprocket. Sprocket should remain hanging in lower chain loop. Remove carrier-to-cylinder block bolts, and remove carrier assembly.
