Cylinder Head: Valves

  1. Check head diameter, valve margin and stem diameter. Replace valve if measurements are not within specification. Refer to VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  2. After grinding valves, install valve into cylinder and measure valve stem installed height from spring seat of cylinder head to tip of valve. See Figure. Distance should be 1.960-2.009" (49.78-51.03 mm). Grind valve tip if necessary.
    CAUTION: If valve tip is ground more than .020" (.51 mm), check clearance between rocker arm and valve spring retainer. See Figure. Clearance must be at least .050" (1.27 mm). If clearance is insufficient, grind rocker arm to obtain correct clearance.
  3. Valves are available with oversize valve stems of .006" (.15 mm), .016" (.40 mm) and .031" (.80 mm). Valve tip diameter should be no less than .275" (6.99 mm) after grinding. If necessary, tip chamfer should be reground to prevent seal damage when valve is installed.
