Oil Pump: Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Plymouth Voyager, 1995 Dodge Dakota, and 1995 Dodge Caravan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install inner rotor (drive gear) and outer rotor (driven gear) into pump housing. Place straightedge across pump housing and both gears. Using feeler gauge, check rotor-to-housing clearance between rotor and straightedge.
  2. With rotors installed, check outer rotor-to-inner rotor clearance. Check outer rotor-to-housing clearance. Remove rotors. Measure outer rotor O.D. and thickness. Measure inner rotor thickness. Check pump cover flatness.
  3. Measure free length of pressure relief valve spring. Using spring pressure tester, check pressure of pressure relief valve spring. Replace oil pump assembly if measurements are not within specification. See OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS  table.

(1) Measured by inserting feeler gauge between outer rotor and housing.
(2) Measured by placing straightedge across pump housing.
