Test 70A - Diagnosing Door Lock & Unlock Circuit

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  section at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-1B after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Lower both front door windows. Using scan tool, actuate door locks. If doors do not lock, go to step 5). If doors lock, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect IOD fuse from Power Distribution Center (PDC). If fuse is blown, go to TEST 22B. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on IOD fuse connector (Pink wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Pink wire as necessary. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  4. Reinstall IOD fuse. Remove driver's door panel to gain access to left door lock switch. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe left door lock switch connector (Pink wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Pink wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace left door lock switch.
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect fuse No. 10 from fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to step 10). If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  6. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of fuse No. 10 connector (Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Red wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Remove door lock and door unlock relays from micro relay center, located behind center console. Door lock relay is fourth relay from right, bottom row. Door unlock relay is third relay from right, bottom row. Go to next step.
    NOTE: RKE module may be accessed by carefully prying each end of instrument panel top cover and sliding cover forward to disengage front clips.
  8. Gain access to Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module (if equipped). RKE module is located under instrument panel top cover, behind information center. Disconnect RKE module connector. Go to next step.
  9. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of lock relay connector (Orange/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange/Black wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuse No. 10.
  10. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on fuse No. 10 connector (Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Red wire as necessary. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  11. Reinstall fuse No. 10. Remove door lock and door unlock relays from micro relay center located behind center console. Door lock relay is fourth relay from right, bottom row. Door unlock relay is third relay from right, bottom row. Go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on lock relay connector (Red wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Red wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  13. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between door lock relay connector terminal "A" (Orange/Black wire) and door unlock relay connector terminal "A" (Pink/Black wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Orange/Black wire or Pink/Black wire as necessary. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  14. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of all ground circuits (Black wires) at door lock relay connector and door unlock relay connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms on any circuit, repair appropriate open circuit. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on all circuits, replace door lock and door unlock relays.
