Direct Ignition System
A Direct Ignition System (DIS) or distributor-less ignition, eliminates mechanical ignition components that can wear out. PCM has complete ignition control and uses a coil pack, Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor to control ignition timing. CMP is used to synchronize fuel injectors with their respective cylinders. CMP and CKP are used to differentiate between fuel injection and spark events.
CKP is located on passenger side of transmission housing, above differential housing. CKP sensor detects slots (3 sets of 4 slots) around an extension of the flywheel/torque converter drive plate. When PCM detects last slot of each set and CMP input, crankshaft position is determined (which piston will be at TDC next). Each slot represents 9, 29, 49 and 69 degrees BTDC marks. Basic timing is determined by CKP sensor position and is not adjustable. One complete engine revolution may be required for PCM to determine crankshaft position during cranking.
CMP sensor is located on timing chain cover. CMP sensor senses slots on cam timing gear. Fuel injection synchronization and cylinder identification are provided through CMP sensor. The unique combination of slots on cam gear are used to identify individual cylinders and initiate fuel and spark for start and run conditions.
3 molded coils mounted on intake manifold are used.
