Test NTC-4A - Checking Coolant Sensor Calibration

NOTE: This test would be invalid if thermostat is stuck open, closed, or missing.
  1. Ensure thermostat is operating properly. Repair thermostat as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If thermostat is operating properly, ensure engine is off and ignition is on. Allow engine to cool to less than 160°F (71°C). Go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Using a thermometer, read engine block temperature near ECT sensor. If readings are not within 15°F (9°C) of each other, replace ECT sensor. Perform TEST VER-2.
  3. If readings are within 15°F (9°C) of each other, start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. If scan tool reading does not stay within 15°F (9°C) of thermometer reading, replace ECT sensor. Perform TEST VER-2. If readings are within 15°F (9°C) of each other, ECT sensor is operating properly. Test is complete.
