Test NS-1A - Qualifying No-Start Condition

- Attempt to crank engine. If engine does not crank, go to TEST NS-9A. If engine cranks, turn ignition off, then on. DO NOT crank engine. Using scan tool, read DIS signal status. If scan tool displays CRANK ONLY, replace crankshaft position sensor. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool does not display CRANK ONLY, go to next step.
- If scan tool displays CAM ONLY, replace camshaft position sensor. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool does not display CAM ONLY, go to next step.
- While cranking engine, observe scan tool display. If scan tool does not display both CRANK and CAM, go to TEST TC-2A. If scan tool displays both CRANK and CAM, turn ignition off. Go to next step.CAUTION: When checking for spark, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) damage may occur if spark plug cable is held more than 1/4" away from ground.
- Disconnect spark plug cable at No. 1 spark plug. Insert an insulated screwdriver in spark plug cable terminal. Hold screwdriver within 1/4" of ground.NOTE: When checking for spark, consider one or two sparks as a no-spark condition.
- While cranking engine for 10 seconds, watch for spark. If good spark occurs, go to TEST NS-2A. If a good spark does not occur, reconnect spark plug cable. Turn ignition off.
- Disconnect spark plug cable at No. 3 spark plug. Insert insulated screwdriver in spark plug cable terminal. Hold screwdriver within 1/4" of ground. While cranking engine for 10 seconds, watch for spark. If good spark occurs, replace No. 1 spark plug cable. Go to TEST NS-2A.
- If good spark does not occur, disconnect Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on CMP sensor connector, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If voltage is less than 7 volts, go to step 10).
- If voltage is more than 7 volts, reconnect CMP sensor connector. Disconnect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector. Check voltage on CKP sensor connector, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If voltage is less than 7 volts, replace CMP sensor. Perform TEST VER-1.
- If voltage is more than 7 volts, check valve timing. Adjust valve timing as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1. If valve timing is to specification, replace front ignition coil. Perform TEST VER-1.
- Disconnect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on CMP sensor connector, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If voltage is more than 7 volts, replace CKP sensor. Perform TEST VER-1.
- If voltage is less than 7 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of CMP sensor connector, 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange wire. Perform TEST VER-1.
- If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance of 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire) between PCM connector terminal No. 7 and CKP sensor connector using an external ohmmeter. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Orange wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1.
