Test TC-30A - EGR System Failure (DTC 32)

- Start engine and allow to idle for 2 minutes. Disconnect Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) solenoid vacuum supply hose. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected EGR vacuum supply hose. If vacuum gauge does not indicate more than 10 in. Hg of vacuum, repair EGR vacuum supply hose to EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If vacuum gauge indicates more than 10 in. Hg of vacuum, reconnect EGR solenoid vacuum supply hose. Disconnect EGR valve hose. See Fig 1 . Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected EGR valve hose. Observe vacuum gauge and momentarily raise engine speed to more than 2000 RPM. If vacuum gauge does not indicate more than 5 in. Hg of vacuum with throttle open, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If vacuum gauge indicates more than 5 in. Hg of vacuum with throttle open, remove vacuum gauge from EGR valve hose. Connect a vacuum pump to EGR valve nipple. Ensure engine is operating at idle. Slowly apply vacuum to EGR valve and observe engine idle. If engine idle is rough or engine stalls with vacuum applied, go to step 5).
- If engine does not idle rough or stall with vacuum applied, remove EGR valve and inspect manifold for restrictions. Repair restrictions as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If no restrictions are present, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
- Turn ignition off. Apply 10 in. Hg of vacuum to EGR valve nipple and observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum does not hold for at least 10 seconds, replace EGR valve assembly. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If vacuum holds for at least 10 seconds, condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. EGR SYSTEM FAILURE DTC sets when Powertrain Control Module (PCM) performs a test of EGR system and monitors Oxygen Sensor (O2S) signal for a change. Possible causes are: EGR valve not opening, blocked EGR transfer tube, or blocked EGR passages in manifold. Go to next step.
- Inspect all related hoses and connectors, and repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If hoses and connectors are okay, perform following additional checks to assist in identifying a possible intermittent problem.
- Visually inspect related wiring harness connectors for broken, bent, pushed-out or corroded terminals. Visually inspect related wiring harnesses for chafed, pierced or broken wires. Check all related Tech Service Bulletins (TSBs) and perform corrective action as necessary. Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2.
