Test NTC-12A - Checking Park/Neutral Switch

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1995 Dodge Ram Van, 1995 Dodge Pickup, and 1995 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Using scan tool, read park/neutral switch input state. Observe scan tool display while moving gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse positions. If scan tool displays P/N and D/R, park/neutral switch is okay. Test is complete. If scan tool does not display P/N and D/R, turn ignition off.
  2. Put gear selector in Park position. Disconnect and inspect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 30, park/neutral position switch sense circuit (Brown/Orange wire on AB body; Brown/Yellow wire on AN body). Observe scan tool display while moving gear selector in and out of Park and Reverse positions.
  4. If scan tool resistance display changes from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2. If scan tool resistance display remains less than 5 ohms at all times, repair short to ground in Brown/Orange wire or Brown/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  5. If scan tool resistance display fluctuates to more than and less than 5 ohms, turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect park/neutral switch connector. Repair as necessary. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of park/neutral switch sense circuit (Brown/Orange wire on AB body; Brown/Yellow wire on AN body) between PCM connector terminal No. 30 and park/neutral switch connector.
  6. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace park/neutral switch. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, repair open in Brown/Orange wire or Brown/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
