Test NS-9A - Repairing No Crank Condition

- Ensure transmission is in Park position. Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral (P/N) switch sense. If scan tool does not display PARK, repair open P/N switch, ground circuit (Brown/Orange wire on AB body; Brown/Yellow wire on AN body; Black/White wire on BR body). Perform TEST VER-1.
- If scan tool displays PARK, disconnect starter relay connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on starter relay connector, fused battery circuit (Black wire on AB and AN bodies; Pink/Black wire on BR body). If voltage is less than 11.6 volts, repair open Black wire, Red/Yellow wire, or Pink/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-1.
- If voltage is more than 11.6 volts, check voltage on starter relay connector, ignition switch output circuit (Yellow wire). While observing scan tool, hold ignition switch in RUN position. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.WARNING: Engine may crank in following step. Keep away from moving engine parts.
- Ensure transmission is in Park position and parking brake is set. Briefly connect a jumper wire between starter relay connector, fused battery circuit (Black wire on AB and AN bodies; Pink/Black wire on BR body) and starter relay output circuit (Brown wire). If starter cranks, go to next step. if starter does not crank, go to step 6).
- Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of starter relay connector, P/N sense circuit (Brown/Orange wire on AB and BR bodies; Black/White wire on BR body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace starter relay. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Brown/Orange wire, Black/Orange wire or Black/White wire. Perform TEST VER-1.
- Note if solenoid clicked when jumper wire was connected. Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect starter solenoid connector (Brown wire) from starter solenoid. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Brown wire between starter relay output connector and starter solenoid connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Brown wire. Perform TEST VER-1.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, install starter relay. Check battery cables for high resistance. If either battery circuit had a voltage drop of more than .2 volt, repair battery circuit for high resistance. Perform TEST VER-1. If voltage drop for either battery circuit is less than .2 volt, go to next step.
- If starter solenoid clicked when jumper wire was connected in step 6), repair starter for a mechanical failure. Perform TEST VER-1. If starter solenoid did not click, replace starter solenoid. Perform TEST VER-1.
