Checking Distributor Position

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Dodge Ram Wagon, 1995 Dodge Ram Van, 1995 Dodge Pickup, 1995 Dodge Dakota, and 1995 Dodge Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Adjusting distributor position does not adjust ignition timing. Ignition timing is controlled by Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Connect scan tool to data link connector. Select SET SYNC. Start engine and observe scan tool display. If distributor is correctly positioned, an IN RANGE message will appear along with 0° (zero degrees). If distributor needs to be adjusted, loosen distributor hold-down bolt. Rotate distributor until reading is as close to 0° (zero degrees) as possible and IN RANGE message is displayed. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 N.m).
