Test TC-24A - A/C Clutch Relay Circuit (DTC 33)

  1. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Using scan tool, actuate A/C clutch relay. If A/C clutch relay does not click, go to step 6). If A/C clutch relay clicks, condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. Go to next step.
  2. A/C CLUTCH RELAY CIRCUIT DTC sets if A/C clutch relay control circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire) does not reflect proper state (high or low) requested by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are open or short in relay coil, open or short in A/C clutch relay control circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire), open or short in ignition 12-volt feed circuit (Dark Blue/White wire) to relay coil, and failed control circuit driver in PCM.
  3. Inspect all related wiring and connectors, and repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If wiring and connectors are okay, wiggle wiring harness from A/C clutch relay to PCM. Ensure actuator test is still running and attempt to reset DTC. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If A/C CLUTCH RELAY CIRCUIT DTC returns, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused problem to occur. Perform TEST VER-2.
  4. If A/C CLUTCH RELAY CIRCUIT DTC does not return, perform following additional checks to assist in identifying a possible intermittent problem.
  5. Visually inspect related wiring harness connectors for broken, bent, pushed-out or corroded terminals. Visually inspect related wiring harnesses for chafed, pierced or broken wires. Check all related Tech Service Bulletins (TSBs) and perform corrective action as necessary. Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2.
  6. Replace A/C clutch relay with a known good relay. If replacement relay clicks, original A/C clutch relay is defective. Perform TEST VER-2. If replacement relay does not click, remove replacement relay. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on A/C clutch relay connector, ignition 12-volt feed circuit (Dark Blue/White wire).
  7. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Dark Blue wire, Dark Blue/White wire or Light Green/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector for damaged, pushed-out or miswired terminals. If connector is not okay, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2.
  8. If connector is okay, put scan tool in ohmmeter mode. Using scan tool, check resistance of A/C clutch relay connector, A/C clutch relay control circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Orange wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  9. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, use an external ohmmeter to check resistance of A/C clutch relay control circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire) between PCM connector terminal No. 34 and A/C clutch relay connector. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Orange wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2.
