Test TC-2A - No Crank Reference Signal At Pcm (DTC 11)

- Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Attempt to start engine; crank engine for at least 10 seconds if necessary. Read scan tool DTCs. If scan tool displays NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM, go to step 5). If scan tool does not display NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM, go to next step.
- At this time, condition required to set DTC is not present. NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM DTC sets if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not see crank signal during engine cranking or no crank signal with cam signal present. Possible causes are: open or shorted crankshaft position sensor Orange wire, open crankshaft position sensor Black/Light Blue wire, open or shorted crankshaft position sensor Tan/Yellow wire, open or shorted camshaft position sensor Gray/Black wire, improperly adjusted sensor(s), damaged rotor, failed sensor, failed distributor drive system, or failed PCM. Go to next step.
- Inspect crankshaft position sensor wiring and connectors. Clean and repair wiring and connectors as required. Perform TEST VER-2. If wiring and connectors are okay, start engine. Wiggle wiring harness from crankshaft position sensor to PCM.
- If engine misses or stalls when wiring harness is wiggled, repair appropriate wiring harness. Perform TEST VER-2. If engine does not miss or stall when wiring harness is wiggled, refer to INACTIVE DTC CONDITION . Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect distributor connector. Repair as required. Perform TEST VER-2. If distributor connector is okay, turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage of distributor connector Orange wire.
- If voltage is less than 7 volts, go to TEST TC-2B. If voltage is more than 7 volts, disconnect coil wire from distributor cap. Place coil wire within 1/4" of a good ground.
- Connect jumper wire between distributor connector Gray/Black wire and Black/Light Blue wire. Make and break connection at distributor connector several times while watching coil wire for spark. If coil wire does not spark, go to step 9). If coil wire sparks, go to next step.
- Remove distributor cap. Crank engine while watching rotor. If rotor turns, replace crankshaft position sensor. Perform TEST VER-2. If rotor does not turn, repair distributor drive system as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2.
- Turn ignition off. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of distributor connector Black/Light Blue wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Blue wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, disconnect PCM connector. Inspect PCM connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals. Repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If PCM connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of crankshaft position sensor Gray/Black wire between distributor connector and PCM connector terminal No. 24. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, place scan tool in ohmmeter mode. Using scan tool, check resistance of distributor connector Gray/Black wire.
- If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms and vehicle is not equipped with an electronic automatic transmission, repair short to ground in Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms and vehicle is equipped with electronic automatic transmission, disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Using scan tool, check resistance of distributor connector Gray/Black wire.
- If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Gray/Black wire. Perform TEST VER-2. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace TCM. Perform TEST VER-2 .
