Test TC-18A - EGR Solenoid Circuit (DTC 32)

  1. If vehicle is not equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, this DTC does not apply. If vehicle is equipped with an EGR valve, using scan tool, erase DTCs.
  2. Using scan tool, actuate EGR solenoid. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If scan tool displays EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT, go to step 6). If scan tool does not display EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT, condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. Go to next step.
  3. EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC sets if EGR solenoid is not in its proper state when monitored by Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Possible causes are: open or shorted EGR solenoid, open EGR solenoid Dark Blue/White wire, open or shorted EGR solenoid Gray/Yellow wire, or failed PCM. Go to next step.
  4. Inspect all related wiring and connectors and repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If no problems were found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, read DTCs. EGR actuation test should still be running. Wiggle wiring harness from EGR solenoid to PCM. If EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC returns, repair wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2. If EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC does not return, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION  . Perform TEST VER-2.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Turn ignition on. Put scan tool in voltmeter mode. Using scan tool, check voltage on EGR solenoid connector Dark Blue/White wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair appropriate open wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  7. If voltage is more than 10 volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Gray/Yellow wire between EGR solenoid connector and PCM connector terminal No. 35. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Gray/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  8. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, put scan tool in ohmmeter mode. Using scan tool, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 35 (Gray/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Gray/Yellow wire. Perform TEST VER-2.
  9. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, reconnect EGR solenoid connector. Turn ignition on. Put scan tool in voltmeter mode. Using scan tool, check voltage on PCM connector terminal No. 35 (Gray/Yellow wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2.
