Removal (NV 3500)

Disconnect negative battery cable. Shift transmission to Neutral. Disconnect shift boot, and remove shifter lever from transmission stub lever. Noting position of plate for reassembly reference, remove reaction plate from shift lever opening in rear housing. On Pickup, remove rollers from anti-rotation bracket with pencil magnet.
On all models, raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft position sensor. Remove skid plate (if equipped). Drain transmission if it is being repaired.
Index mark drive shaft(s) for reassembly reference, and remove shaft(s). Remove front exhaust pipe, if necessary. Support engine using adjustable jackstand. Disconnect speed sensor harness connector, back-up light harness connector and speedometer cable (if equipped).
On 4WD models, remove transfer case. See TRANSFER CASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On all models, support transmission using suitable transmission jack and remove rear crossmember. Disconnect transmission harness connectors. Remove clutch slave cylinder, and secure it aside.
Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifold and at other connections as necessary. Remove starter motor, if necessary. Remove transmission-to-clutch housing bolts. Slide transmission rearward until input shaft clears clutch assembly. Lower transmission from vehicle.
