Removal (AX-15)

- Shift transmission lever to Neutral. Raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft position sensor. Remove skid plate (if equipped). Drain transmission fluid, if necessary.
- Mark drive shaft and "U" joint for reassembly reference. Disconnect and remove drive shaft. Disconnect distance sensor wires and speedometer cable, if equipped. Disconnect harness from clips on transmission case. On 4WD models, remove transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- On all models, use an adjustable jackstand to support engine. Remove insulator-to-crossmember nuts. Remove insulator, if necessary. Remove crossmember-to-frame rail nuts and bolts. Rotating crossmember diagonally, remove from vehicle.
- Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifold and other connections as necessary. Remove "Y" pipe and position remaining pipes for working clearance. Lower transmission 3" (76 mm). Reaching around transmission case, unseat and lift shift lever dust boot. Press shift lever retainer downward, turn retainer counterclockwise, and lift lever and retainer out of shift tower.
- Remove slave cylinder. Remove clutch housing dust cover, if necessary. Supporting transmission with a jack, remove clutch housing nuts and bolts. Moving transmission and clutch housing rearward, lower transmission from vehicle.
