UNDEPLOYED Air Bag

Failure to follow air bag service precautions may result in air bag deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Perform remote deployment outdoors. Never attempt to deploy air bag module inside a building, within 20 feet of personnel, or with trim cover face down.
In some accidents such as side or rear-end collisions, air bag(s) may not deploy. If vehicle is being scrapped or sold for junk, air bag must be deployed. Air bag module should never be sold as a used part.
- Before proceeding, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove air bag module(s). See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL and PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- With air bag module removed, cut air bag connector from wires at air bag module. Strip 1" (25 mm) of insulation from cut ends of harness. Move air bag module to an isolated place. Place air bag on a smooth sturdy surface with trim cover facing upward. Connect two 20-foot wires to end of harness wires. Move 20 feet away.
- Connect other end of 20-foot wires to terminals of a 12-volt battery. After air bag module deploys, let module cool and allow dust to settle for at least 30 minutes, before approaching.
- If air bag module does not deploy after following this procedure, air bag module is faulty. Contact vehicle manufacturer for further instructions on disposal procedures.
