Gauge Reading Is Inaccurate
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1991 GMC Pickup, 1991 GMC Cab & Chassis, 1991 GMC C3500 HD, 1991 Chevrolet Pickup, and 1991 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Check wiring for corroded or loose connections. Clean and tighten as required. If wiring and connections are okay, remove fuel gauge sending unit. Using an ohmmeter, test sending unit resistance. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE table.
- If sending unit resistance values are correct, disconnect front body wiring harness connector at engine firewall. Connect Gauge Tester (J-24538-A) to instrument cluster terminal A1. See Figure.
- Turn ignition on, and test gauge using tester. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE table. If gauge reads accurately when connected to gauge tester, check wiring between fuel tank and front connector. If gauge reads between 1/4 and 1/2 full when tester is set at 90 ohms, replace fuel gauge.
