Fuel Transfer Pump (Fuel Volume)

  1. Connect a Hand-Held Tachometer (3377462) to engine. At transfer pump, connect a rubber hose to output line that leads to fuel filter/water separator. Place other end of rubber hose in graduated container which measures ounces. While cranking engine for 30 seconds, note engine cranking RPM (DO NOT exceed 30 seconds; starter may be damaged).
  2. To determine fuel volume, use engine cranking RPM and fuel volume delivered. See Fig 1 . For example: if engine cranking speed was 250 RPM and fuel volume was 13.6 ounces, fuel volume would be okay, as this was above the flow line. If engine cranking speed was 250 RPM and fuel volume was 11.9 ounces, this would be an inadequate fuel volume, as this was below the flow line.
  3. If fuel volume is less than specified minimum, check for restricted fuel line. If fuel line is okay, replace transfer pump.
