Charge Air Cooler
Before entering the combustion chambers, the air from the turbocharger is routed through an air-to-water charge air cooler. As the turbocharger compresses air, the air's temperature rises. The heated, compressed air then flows through the charge air cooler core, where it is cooled by coolant passing through the charge air cooler. The cooler, denser air allows a denser air/fuel charge to enter the combustion chambers, producing significantly more power.
The hot coolant is then routed through the charge air cooler radiator, where it releases the heat it absorbed at the charge air cooler. An electric pump mounted to the charge air cooler radiator circulates coolant through the system. Pump is controlled by the ECM through a charge air cooler air pump relay.
