Steering Gear Replace


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect pressure and return lines from steering gear housing, then plug hose ends and gear housing ports to prevent contamination.
3. On all models, remove pinch bolt from intermediate shaft.
4. Remove pitman arm nut and washer from pitman shaft, then mark relationship between shaft and arm for assembly reference.
5. Remove pitman arm using tool No. J-6632 or equivalent.
6. Remove steering gear attaching bolts and the steering gear.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering gear attaching bolts to 70 ft. lbs. on 1985 models or 55---60 ft. lbs. on 1986---87 models, intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 30 ft. lbs. and pitman shaft nut to 177---180 ft. lbs. on on 1985 models or 185 ft. lbs. on 1986---87 models.
