Suspension - Front (4WD) - Except "S" Series: Description

NOTE: Vehicle series numbers used in this article has been abbreviated for common reference to Chevrolet and GMC models. Chevrolet models use numerical designations as listed; GMC models are identified as follows: 10 = 1500; 20 = 2500; 30 = 3500.

At the wheel ends of the axle tubes, 2 types of steering knuckle attachments are used. The K10/20 series knuckle is attached with ball joints. The K30 series use a king pin type attachment. The tapered upper king pin fits in a tapered nylon bushing. The lower king pin is part of the bearing cap and rides in a tapered roller bearing.

Hydraulic or gas-charged shock absorbers are attached to brackets on frame rails and front axle assembly. The Z75 option features 2 shocks per side. Leaf springs mount to frame rail brackets and shackles, providing support for axle assembly. A stabilizer bar is mounted to frame rail by brackets and to front axle assembly by pivot bolts. An automatic locking hub is used on all models. This system automatically engages the hubs whenever four-wheel drive is selected. A manual locking hub is also used on K30 series (only). This system must be engaged manually whenever 4WD is selected.
