Ball Joint Turning Effort Check

  1. Raise and support vehicle on frame hoist, then position adjustable jack stands just inside of front springs. Disconnect connecting rod and tie rod to allow independent movement of each steering knuckle.
  2. Attach a spring-type pull scale (fish scale), which reads in lb. (kg) increments, to the tie rod mounting hole of the steering knuckle arm. With knuckle assembly in the straight-ahead position, determine the right angle pull required to keep knuckle turning after initial breakaway.
  3. The turning pull tension should not exceed 25 lbs. (11.3 kg) for each knuckle assembly, in either direction. If pull tension is not to specification, see REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  section of this article for ball joint stud sleeve adjustment.
NOTE: Spindle needle bearings should be checked and lubricated at the same time as the front wheel bearings. The lubrication interval should be 12,000 miles under normal conditions. Off road use (such as in mud or water) will require shorter intervals. Spindle bearings are accessible after removing the spindle.
