"C", "K" & "P" Models W/O Tilt Wheel (1970-72): Reassembly
- Install dash panel seal, floor pan, and firewall clamps over end of column. Lubricate all bearing surfaces on shift tube (omit if floor shift). Place felt seal onto shift tube next to spring, then place shift tube in column.
-
NOTE: This step applies to vehicles without floor shift.
On vehicles with manual transmission, temporarily install spacer, 1st-Reverse shift lever and lower adjusting ring. Place a block of wood on top of adjusting ring and tap until shift tube bottoms. Remove adjusting ring and spacer, then lubricate spacer and reinstall. On vehicles with automatic transmission, align three holes in selector plate with three holes in column, position clamping ring and install the three screws.
- Install lower bearing in adjusting ring and then install adjusting ring, clamp, and screws. Install shift lever housing (or extension housing if floor shift) seat and bushing to upper end of housing. Thread directional signal switch wiring harness through switch and shift lever (or extension) housing. Lubricate inner diameter of shift housing (or extension) and install on column. Install switch housing plastic washer assembly. Press upper bearing into switch contact support.
- Install directional signal switch housing, contact support, bearing, and switch. Install column wiring harness cover and back-up lamp switch. Install directional signal and gearshift levers.
- On vehicles with manual transmission, rotate adjusting ring until there is specified end play between adjusting ring and 1st-Reverse shift lever as shown in illustration. Tighten adjusting ring screws (omit if floor shift). On vehicles with automatic transmission, position tang on shift lever on ear of selector plate, then rotate adjusting ring until there is specified clearance or end play between adjusting ring and shift lever. Tighten screws.
- On "P" models, loosely install lower bearing preload spring and clamp. On "C" and "K" models, loosely install lower bearing preload spring and washer. Install lower steering shaft and coupling to upper steering shaft and tighten coupling clamp bolt. On all models, slide steering shaft assembly up through column assembly. Install directional signal canceling cam, steering shaft nut and lock washer.
