Battery Disconnect and Connect

For information on Ford Color Coded Illustrations refer to OEM COLOR CODING

Disconnect 

NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and connected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven to allow the PCM to relearn the adaptive strategy values.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Refer to: Battery and Battery Charging Health and Safety Precautions .

    Non-Hybrid Vehicles 

    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the battery monitoring sensor when removing the terminal from the battery post. Do not pry on the terminals or component damage may occur.
    NOTE: When disconnecting the battery ground cable to interrupt power to the vehicle electrical system, disconnect the battery ground cable only. It is not necessary to disconnect the positive battery cable.
    1. Disconnect the battery monitoring sensor electrical connector.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the nut. Position the negative battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    1. Position the positive battery cable battery terminal cover aside.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the positive battery cable terminal nut.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    3. Detach the battery cable retainer from the battery hold-down bracket and position the positive battery cable aside.

    Hybrid Vehicles with a Spare Tire 

  2. Remove the rear compartment cover.

  3. Remove the nut and the spare tire.

    NOTE: The following step is to interrupt power to the vehicle electrical system only.
    1. Remove the bolt and position the negative battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 35 Nm

    2. Using electrical tape, cover the negative battery cable terminal.

    NOTE: The following steps are to disconnect the battery cables from the battery.
  4. Remove the nuts and the spare tire hold-down bracket.

    Torque

    : 20 Nm

  5. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the battery monitoring sensor when removing the terminal from the battery post. Do not pry on the terminals or component damage may occur.

    1. Disconnect the battery monitoring sensor electrical connector.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the nut. Position the negative battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    1. Position the positive battery cable battery terminal cover aside.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the nut. Position the positive battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    Hybrid Vehicles without a Spare Tire 

  6. Remove the rear compartment cover.

    NOTE: The following step is to interrupt power to the vehicle electrical system only.
    1. Remove the bolt and position the negative battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 35 Nm

    2. Using electrical tape, cover the negative battery cable terminal.

    NOTE: The following steps are to disconnect the battery cables from the battery.
  7. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the battery monitoring sensor when removing the terminal from the battery post. Do not pry on the terminals or component damage may occur.

    1. Disconnect the battery monitoring sensor electrical connector.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the nut. Position the negative battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    1. Position the positive battery cable battery terminal cover aside.
    2. Loosen, but do not remove the nut. Position the positive battery cable aside.

      Torque

      : 5.4 Nm

    Connect 

  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  9. For vehicles with window one-touch open and close front windows, perform the power door window initialization. Refer to: Power Door Window Initialization - Vehicles With: One-Touch Open and Close Front Windows .
