Pinpoint Test Kn: Variable Speed Electric Cooling Fan Motor
- Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition PCM P0480:00 Fan 1 Control Circuit: No Sub Type Information Sets if the PCM detects the voltage on the fan control variable (FCV) circuit is not within the expected range. Possible Causes
- Cooling fan circuitry concern
- Cooling fan relay
- Cooling fan clutch solenoid
- Cooling fan module (8B658)
- Cooling fan assembly (8C607)
- PCM (12A650)
- KN1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC (DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE))

NOTE: Check all the cooling fan system fuses. If any cooling fan system fuse is damaged, install all new cooling fan fuses and check the cooling fan system for normal operation before continuing with the pinpoint test.
Is DTC P0480 present?
Yes GO to KN4. No For symptoms without DTCs: GO to KN2.
For all others:
REFER to the Symptom Charts for further direction. -
- KN2 VERIFY A/C STATUS
- Verify the A/C system is OFF.
- Start the engine.
Access the PCM and monitor the AC_REQ (Status) PID
Is A/C being requested?
Yes REFER to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING , to diagnose the A/C system. No For electric cooling fan (s) always on: GO to KN3.
For all others: GO to KN4. - KN3 CHECK THE AIR CONDITIONING PRESSURE TRANSDUCER SENSOR
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect ACP Sensor connector.
- Start the engine.
Does the cooling fan turn off?
Yes REFER to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING to diagnose the Air Conditioning Pressure (ACP) Sensor. No GO to KN4. - KN4 COMMAND THE COOLING FAN ON TO CHECK OPERATION

NOTE: Applying battery voltage to the cooling fan motor circuits may damage the cooling fan.

NOTE: Some vehicles have more than one cooling fan. Make sure both cooling fans operate correctly.
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect CF Module connector.
- Disconnect CF Motor connector.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 1 connector.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 2 connector.
- Visually inspect all the connectors for damage, corrosion and pushed out pins.
- Connect CF Module connector.
- Connect CF Motor connector.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 1 connector.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 2 connector.
- Ignition ON.
Access the PCM and control the FAN_DSD (Percentage, %) PID
- Command the fan to full ON.
- Access the PCM and monitor the FANELC_CMD PID.
- The FANELC_CMD PID value should be greater than 80%.
- Wait 30 seconds for the cooling fan to respond to the commanded speed.
Does the cooling fan continue to run after 30 seconds?
Yes The concern is elsewhere. REFER to the Symptom Charts for further direction. No GO to KN5. -
- KN5 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE COOLING FAN

- For Transit Connect,
- Disconnect CF Module connector.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead FANPWR Pin 1CF Module Connector
- For all others,
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 1 connector.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 2 connector.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead FANPWR#brushless Pin 1Cooling Fan Motor 1 Connector
- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead FANPWR#brushlessCooling Fan Motor 2 Connector Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagrams
Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V?
Yes For Bronco Sport, Corsair, Edge, Escape/Kuga, Expedition, Maverick, Nautilus, Navigator, Ranger and Transit Connect: GO to KN14.
For all others: GO to KN9.No For Bronco Sport, Corsair, Edge, Escape/Kuga, Expedition, Maverick, Nautilus, Navigator, Ranger and Transit Connect: GO to KN13.
For all others: GO to KN6. -
- KN6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE RELAY

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect FC1 Relay connector.
- Disconnect FC2 Relay connector.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead B+#brushless Pin 3FC1 Relay Connector VPWR#brushless Pin 1FC1 Relay Connector
- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead B+#brushless FC2 Relay Connector Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagrams VPWR#brushless FC2 Relay Connector Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagrams
Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V?
Yes GO to KN7. No REPAIR the open circuit.
Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. -
- KN7 CHECK THE RELAY
Is a concern present?
Yes INSTALL a new FC relay in question.Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No GO to KN8. - KN8 CHECK THE RELAY GROUND

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to KN10. No REPAIR the open circuit.
Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. -
- KN10 CHECK THE FCV#2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

Are the resistances greater than 10k ohms?
Yes GO to KN11. No REPAIR the short circuit.
Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. -
- KN11 CHECK THE FCV#2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

- Measure the voltage between:

- Measure the voltage between:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead FCV#brushlessCooling Fan Motor 2 Connector Refer to the appropriate Wiring Diagrams
Is any voltage present?
Yes REPAIR the short circuit.
Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.No GO to KN12. - KN12 CHECK THE FCV#2 CIRCUITS FOR INTERMITTENT CONCERNS

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect CF Module connector.
- Disconnect CF Motor connector.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 1 connector.
- Disconnect Cooling Fan Motor 2 connector.
- Visually inspect all connectors for:
- pushed out pins
- corrosion
- Connect CF Module connector.
- Connect CF Motor connector.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 1 connector.
- Connect Cooling Fan Motor 2 connector.
- Connect PCM connector.
- Connect FC Relay connector.
- Connect FC1 Relay connector.
- Connect FC2 Relay connector.
- Ignition ON.
Access the PCM and control the FAN_DSD (Percentage, %) PID
- Command the fan to full ON.
- Access the PCM and monitor the FANELC_CMD PID.
- The FANELC_CMD PID value should be greater than 80%.
- Wait 30 seconds for the cooling fan to respond to the commanded speed.
- While observing the fan, wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness while working from the cooling fan to the PCM.
Is a concern present?
Yes REPAIR as necessary. If a wiring concern is not present, INSTALL a new cooling fan. REFER to the Cooling Fan Motor and Shroud . Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. -
- KN13 CHECK THE RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT

- Disconnect FC2 Relay connector.
- Disconnect FC3 Relay connector.
- Disconnect BJB-B connector.

- Measure the resistance between:

- Measure the resistance between:

Yes REPAIR the short circuit.

- KN17 CHECK THE FCV#2 FOR INTERMITTENT CONCERNS
