Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING - 3.5L DURATEC (202KW 275PS) 3.5L ECOBOOST (235KW 320PS)
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: SINGLE BATTERY .or Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: DUAL BATTERIES
  5. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
    2. Remove theRH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .

  6. If equipped with dual generators, remove the A/C compressor. Refer to: AIR CONDITIONING (A C) COMPRESSOR - 3.5L DURATEC (202KW 275PS)
  7. If equipped with dual generators, remove the secondary generator. Refer to: Generator - 3.5L Duratec (202kW/275PS) .
  8. If equipped with dual generators, remove the stud bolt, bolts and the generator bracket.

  9. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .
    2. Remove the coolant pump. Refer to: Coolant Pump .

  10. Remove the bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.

    1. Remove the nut.
    2. Remove the generator stud.
    3. Remove the bolt.
    4. Position the generator aside.

  11. Remove the bolt and the upper intake manifold support bracket.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers from the engine front cover.

    • Disconnect the oil pressure control solenoid wiring harness electrical connector.

  12. NOTE: If equipped with dual generators, there will be 2 less bolts.

    Remove the engine front cover bolts.

  13. Using a pry tool, locate the pry pads shown and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.

  14. Using the special tools, remove the engine front cover to coolant pipe seal.Use Special Service Tool: 205-150 (T80T-4000-S) Installer, Spindle Bearing., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  15. Using the special tools, remove the engine front cover to coolant pipe seal.Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

  16. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
