Transmission - LHD RWD: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: GENERAL INFORMATION
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: SINGLE BATTERY . Refer to: BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT - VEHICLES WITH: DUAL BATTERIES
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: FRONT SUBFRAME
    2. Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to: REAR DRIVESHAFT

  4. NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Remove the retainers, position aside and secure the transmission fluid cooler.

    1. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever.
    2. Press the tabs, disconnect the selector lever cable from the bracket and position aside the selector lever cable.

  5. Remove the retainers and the transmission fluid cooler bracket.

  6. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
    NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Remove the transmission fluid pan bolts and the transmission fluid pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

  7. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan.

  8. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor . Refer to: Starter Motor .
  9. Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

  10. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    1. Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.
    2. Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

  11. Remove the dual catalytic converter Y-pipe to muffler bolts.

  12. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack contacts the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, support the transmission.Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  13. Remove the transmission support crossmember. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .
  14. Remove the bolt and position aside the bracket.

  15. NOTE: To disconnect the electrical connector, slide the plastic lock to the unlocked position. While pressing the plastic tab, disconnect the electrical connector

    Disconnect the transmission electrical connector, remove the retainers and position the wiring away from the transmission.

  16. Remove the lower bellhousing bolt.

  17. Remove the top bellhousing bolts and position aside the bracket.

  18. Remove the LH side bellhousing bolts and the selector lever cable bracket.

  20. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool.

  21. Using the high-lift transmission jack, remove the transmission from the vehicle.Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  22. If installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove the bolts and bracket.

  23. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carryout the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning .
