Exhaust Manifold LH: Removal

All vehicles 

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING
2. Remove the LH turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger LH .

   Vehicles with cast iron exhaust manifold 

3. • Remove and discard the nuts.
   • Remove the exhaust manifold.

4. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket and studs.

   Vehicles with stainless steel exhaust manifold 

5. • Remove and discard the nuts.
   • Remove the exhaust manifold.

   All vehicles 

7. • Clean and inspect the exhaust manifold. Refer to: Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection .
   • NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces.

     Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head with metal cleaner. Follow the directions on the packaging.

     Material: Metal Cleaner

8. This step is only necessary if the original cast iron exhaust manifold is being replaced by a stainless steel exhaust manifold.Using a bottoming tap, clean the threads of the stud holes that were not used for the original exhaust manifold.
