Axle Assembly: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
NOTE: Right hand (RH) shown, left hand (LH) similar.
  1. Remove the rear wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire
  2. Remove the wheel speed sensor bolt and position the wheel speed sensor aside.

    Torque : 11 Nm

  3. Remove and discard the anchor plate bolts, position and support the caliper aside.

    Torque : 115 Nm

    Vehicles with Drum In Hat Parking Brake 

  4. Remove the wheel speed sensor bolt and position the wheel speed sensor aside.

    Torque : 11 Nm

  5. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.

    Remove and discard the anchor plate bolts, position and support the caliper aside.

    Torque : 175 Nm

    All vehicles 

    1. Index-mark the rear driveshaft flange to the pinion flange to maintain alignment during installation.
    2. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.

      Remove and discard the rear driveshaft to pinion flange bolts.

      Torque : 103 Nm

    3. Position and support the rear driveshaft aside.

  6. NOTE: Make sure that new bolts are installed.

    If equipped. Remove and discard the pinion nose damper bolts and remove the pinion nose damper.

    Torque : 62 Nm

  7. Remove and discard the rear stabilizer bar bracket bolts and position the rear stabilizer bar aside.

    Torque : 70 Nm

  8. Remove the brake line bracket bolts.

    Torque : 25 Nm

  9. Remove and discard the vent hose retainer and position aside the rear axle housing vent hose.

  10. NOTE: Make sure the axle assembly vent tube and elbow is not damaged or blocked.
    NOTE: This step is not necessary when installing a new component.
    NOTE: Apply loctite to the vent threads while installing vent into the axle assembly.

    Clean and inspect the vent tube and elbow. Install new vent tube and elbow if blocked or cracked.

    Material : Thread Locking Sealant

  11. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed or capped.

    1. Disconnect the brake line tube nut.

      Torque : 18 Nm

    2. Remove the brake line tube retainer.
    3. Position the brake line and brake hose aside.
    4. Disconnect the ABS harness clips. Position the ABS harness aside.

    • Separate the ABS harness clips from the differential housing cover stud bolts.

    • Remove the brake line from the top retaining clip on the differential housing.

    • Separate the ABS harness and brake line from the differential housing axle tube. Position the ABS harness and brake line aside.

  12. NOTE: Make sure that all openings are sealed or capped.

    1. Disconnect the brake line tube nut.

      Torque : 18 Nm

    2. Remove the brake line tube retainer.
    3. Position the brake line and brake hose aside.
    4. Disconnect the ABS harness clips. Position the ABS harness aside.

  13. On both sides. Separate the ABS wire from the retaining clip.

  14. On both sides. Remove and discard the rear shock absorber lower bolt and nut and position the parking brake cable bracket and the rear shock absorber aside.

    Torque : 110 Nm

  15. Using the transmission jack, support the axle assembly. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  16. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    On both sides. Remove the U-bolts and nuts.
