Symptom Chart - Climate Control Systems

NOTE: Some PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may inhibit A/C operation. If any PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are retrieved, diagnose those first. Refer to the PCM DTC Chart.

Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .

Condition Possible Sources Actions
Unable to duplicate the customer concern and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test E
A module does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool Fuse
Wiring, terminals or connectors
HVAC control module
REFER to: Communications Network .
Externally Controlled Variable Displacement Compressor (EVDC) poor performance/does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test S
Insufficient Air Conditioning (A/C) cooling Improper refrigerant level PERFORM the refrigerant system tests. REFER to the appropriate GENERAL PROCEDURES . If OK, DIAGNOSE for a temperature door actuator not operating correctly.
Temperature door actuator GO to Pinpoint Test K
The A/C is always on -- A/C mode always commanded on Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test J
The A/C is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test I
The A/C pressure relief valve is discharging High system pressure
A/C pressure relief valve
Using the appropriate manifold gauge set, CHECK the A/C system pressure. If the system pressure is above the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, 3, 447-4, 137 kPa (500-600 psi), REPAIR the system for a restriction.
CHECK the high side system pressure. If the pressure is below the A/C pressure relief valve open pressure, 3, 447-4, 137 kPa (500-600 psi), INSTALL a new A/C compressor. REFER to the appropriate REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
The air inlet door is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test F
The front blower motor is inoperative Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test L
The front blower motor does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test M
The front electric booster heater is inoperative or does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test A
Incorrect or erratic direction of airflow from outlets Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test G
Insufficient, erratic or no heat Refer to the Pinpoint Test For engine coolant/heater core related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test H
For front electric booster heater related concerns, GO to Pinpoint Test A
Reduced outlet airflow Plugged pollen filter INSPECT the pollen filter. REFER to the appropriate REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . If OK, DIAGNOSE for low refrigerant charge, A/C always commanded on or blower motor not operating correctly.
Improper refrigerant level PERFORM the refrigerant system tests. REFER to the appropriate GENERAL PROCEDURES . If refrigerant charge is OK, GO to Pinpoint Test J
Blower motor GO to Pinpoint Test M
The temperature control is inoperative or does not operate correctly Refer to the Pinpoint Test GO to Pinpoint Test K
The temperature setpoint does not repeat after setting the ignition to OFF HVAC control module INSTALL a new HVAC control module. REFER to the appropriate REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
