Fuel Tank: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  2. Drain the fuel tank. Refer to: Fuel Tank Draining .
  3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
    1. NOTE: Make sure that new nuts are installed.

      Remove and discard the nuts.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    2. Position back the exhaust system, remove and discard the gasket.

  4. If equipped, remove the bolts and the center support brace.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  5. Remove the four stamped nuts, the two clips and the deflector shield.

  6. Release the 3 exhaust isolators and position aside the muffler assembly.

    • Remove the retainers and position the front floor exhaust system cover aside.

    • NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.
      NOTE: Pull the heat shield towards the RH side of the vehicle (do not push on the shield to remove).

      Remove the retainers and the underbody fuel tank heat shield.

    WARNING: Fuel may remain pressurized in some fuel lines after the Fuel System Pressure Release procedure. Wear safety gloves and a face shield when disconnecting pressure lines to avoid skin and eye contact. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
    NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Disconnect the fuel feed line quick release couplings and position aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  8. NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.

      Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp(s)

    2. Disconnect the vapor tube quick release coupling and position aside the hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  9. Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack and remove the fuel tank strap bolts.

    Install the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    1. NOTE: Make sure that no strain is placed on the fuel lines and wiring harnesses.
      NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.
      NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

      Lower the fuel tank.

      Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    2. Using retaining straps, secure the fuel tank.

  10. Disconnect the fuel pump and sender unit electrical connector.

  11. Remove the clip and disconnect the evaporative emission canister electrical connectors and the hose.

  12. NOTE: Make sure that no components catch.

    Remove the fuel tank.
