Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Cooling fan. Refer to: Cooling Fan .
    2. Accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
    3. Accessory drive belt idler pulley. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Idler Pulley .
    4. CMP sensor. Refer to: Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor .
    5. Crankshaft pulley and front seal. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .
    6. LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
    7. RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .

  3. Remove the bolts and the coolant pump pulley.

  4. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump assembly aside.

  5. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    1. Disconnect the RH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector, remove the nut and the capacitor.
    2. Disconnect the LH radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector, remove the nut and the capacitor.

  6. Remove the nut and position the transmission oil cooler tube bracket aside.

    • Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector.

    • Slide the wiring harness bracket off the stud bolt and position the harness aside.

  7. Remove the front oil pan bolts.

  8. Remove the engine cover bolts and studs.

  9. NOTE: Timing chain removed from illustration for clarity.

    Remove the engine front cover from the front cover to cylinder block dowel.

  10. Remove and discard the engine front cover gaskets.
