Camshaft Roller Follower: Removal

All camshaft roller followers
- Depending on the camshaft roller follower being serviced, remove the LH or RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH . Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
All RH exhaust camshaft roller followers
- Remove the following items:
- Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
- RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
All LH intake camshaft roller followers except cylinder No. 10 rear intake camshaft roller follower

NOTE: The balance shaft bearing caps must be installed in their original locations or engine damage may occur. Record camshaft bearing cap locations.
Using the sequence shown, remove the bolts, the balance shaft bearing caps and the balance shaft.
NOTE: The No. 6, 7 and 10 cylinder front intake camshaft roller followers require removal of the adjacent camshaft cap for correct use of the valve spring compressor. DO NOT remove more than one camshaft cap at a time.Cylinder No. 6 front intake camshaft roller follower

NOTE: Remove the camshaft front thrust bearing cap straight upward from the bearing towers, or the bearing cap may be damaged from side loading.
Remove the bolts and the camshaft front thrust bearing cap.
- The camshaft front thrust bearing cap contains an oil metering groove. Make sure the groove is free of foreign material.
Cylinder No. 7 front intake camshaft roller follower
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft cap.
Cylinder No. 10 front intake camshaft roller follower
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft cap.
All camshaft roller followers
- Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the camshaft lobe for the camshaft roller follower being serviced is pointing upward.

NOTE: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original locations or engine damage may occur. Record camshaft roller follower locations.NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.
Using the special tool, remove the camshaft roller follower. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.
- Inspect the roller follower for flat spots or scoring. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and hydraulic lash adjuster for damage.
