Camshaft Roller Follower: Installation

All camshaft roller followers 

1. NOTE: The camshaft roller followers must be installed in their original locations or engine damage may occur.
   NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.
   NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.
   1. Lubricate the camshaft roller follower with clean engine oil.
   2. Using the Valve Spring Compressor, compress the valve spring and install the camshaft roller follower. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.

   Cylinder No. 10 front intake camshaft roller follower 

2. • Lubricate the camshaft bearing cap with clean engine oil.
   • Install the camshaft bearing cap and the bolts.
   • Torque:

     Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

     Stage 2: 45 °

   Cylinder No. 7 front intake camshaft roller follower 

3. • Lubricate the camshaft bearing cap with clean engine oil.
   • Install the camshaft bearing cap and the bolts.
   • Torque:

     Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

     Stage 2: 45 °

   Cylinder No. 6 front intake camshaft roller follower 

4. NOTE: Install the camshaft front thrust bearing cap straight downward onto the bearing towers, or the bearing cap may be damaged from side loading.
   1. Lubricate the camshaft front thrust bearing cap with clean engine oil.
   2. Install the camshaft front thrust bearing cap and the bolts.
   3. Torque:

      Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

      Stage 2: 45 °

   All LH intake camshaft roller followers except cylinder No. 10 rear intake camshaft roller follower 

5. 1. Lubricate the balance shaft journals with clean engine oil.
   2. Install the balance shaft with the timing marks on the balance shaft gear (1) and the camshaft gear (2) aligned.

6. NOTE: The balance shaft bearing caps must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.
   1. Install the balance shaft bearing caps and install the bolts finger-tight.
   2. Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

   All RH exhaust camshaft roller followers 

7. Install the following items:
   1. RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
   2. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

   All camshaft roller followers 

8. Depending on the camshaft roller follower being serviced, install the LH or RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH . Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
