Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Unit: Installation

Left hand units 

  1. NOTE: The oil tubes must be removed to access the flats on the camshaft that will be used to tighten the VCT assembly bolts.

    • Loosen the fasteners and remove the oil tube.

    • Loosen the fasteners and remove the oil tube.

  2. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

  3. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be in the position shown.

  4. NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the exhaust camshaft slightly (using a wrench on the flats of the camshaft) to seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    Rotate the secondary timing chain tensioner clockwise 45 degrees so the ramped area is facing forward and fully seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    • If the secondary timing chain is not centered over the tensioner, reposition the VCT assemblies until they are fully seated on the camshafts.

  5. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

    1. Install a new exhaust VCT assembly bolt.
    2. Install new intake VCT assembly bolts.

  6. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolt.

    Tighten the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    Torque:Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    Stage 2: Loosen: 360 deg.

    Stage 3: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

    Stage 4: 150 deg.

  7. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolts.

    Tighten the intake VCT assembly bolts.

    Torque:Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    Stage 2: 90 deg.

  8. Inspect the O-ring seal. If damaged, discard the oil tube assembly.

  9. Apply clean engine oil to the O-ring seal and oil tube.

  10. Install the oil tube and tighten the fasteners in sequence.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  11. Inspect the seals. If damaged, discard the oil tube assembly.

  12. Apply clean engine oil to the seals and oil tube.

  13. Install the oil tube and tighten the fasteners in sequence.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  14. If equipped with dual generators, install the LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH - Vehicles With: Dual Generators .
  15. Install the LH timing chain. Refer to: Timing Chain .

    Right hand units 

  16. NOTE: The oil tubes must be removed to access the flats on the camshaft that will be used to tighten the VCT assembly bolts.

    • Loosen the fasteners and remove the oil tube.

    • Loosen the fasteners and remove the oil tube.

  17. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

  18. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be in the position shown.

  19. NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the exhaust camshaft slightly (using a wrench on the flats of the camshaft) to seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    Rotate the secondary timing chain tensioner counterclockwise 45 degrees so the ramped area is facing forward and fully seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    • If the secondary timing chain is not centered over the tensioner, reposition the VCT assemblies until they are fully seated on the camshafts.

  20. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

    • Install a new exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    • Install new intake VCT assembly bolts.

  21. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolt.

    Tighten the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    Torque:Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  29. Install the RH timing chain. Refer to: Timing Chain .
  30. Road test the vehicle.
