Engine Mount LH: Removal

4x2/4x4 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  3. Remove the following items:

    1. Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
    2. Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

  4. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

    Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

    • Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  7. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  8. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the engine mount studs.

  9. Remove the bolts and the LH heat shield.

    4x4 

  10. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

  11. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

  12. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

    1. WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.

    2. Separate the steering column shaft U-joint from the steering gear.

  13. Remove the steering gear boot.

  14. Using an adjustable stand, support the front axle. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  15. Remove and discard the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.

  16. Remove and discard the axle shaft housing carrier bushing nut and the bolt.

  17. NOTE: After loosening the bolt, it may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when removing the bolt.

    Remove and discard the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt.

  18. Using an adjustable stand, lower the axle to allow clearance for the engine mount to be removed. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    4x2/4x4 

    1. Detach the coolant tube retainer.
    2. Remove the nut and position the coolant tube and bracket aside.

  19. Disconnect the coolant hose quick release couplings.

  20. Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.

  21. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the engine mount-to-frame bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-frame nut plate can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount-to-frame bolts.

    • Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts.

    • Allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

    1. Position an adjustable stand and wood block under transmission bellhousing. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle StandsUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block
    2. Raise the adjustable stand 63.5 mm (2.5 in).

  22. Remove the LH engine mount.

    1. Inspect the engine mount-to-frame nut plate for thread damage.
    2. If the nut plate is damaged, remove and discard the engine mount-to-frame nut plate.

  23. Remove the nut and position the wiring harness aside.

  24. Remove the bolts and the LH engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket.

    • Discard the bolts.

    • Clean the engine mount-to-cylinder block and engine mount-to-frame mating surfaces of any dirt or foreign material prior to installation.
