Engine Front Cover: Removal

NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
- Remove the following items:
- Air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
- Air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .

NOTE: It is not necessary to clamp off the degas bottle hose with the cooling system drained.
Degas bottle. Refer to: Degas Bottle .

- Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and remove the radiator to degas bottle hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Pull the lower radiator hose spring clip until the end of the clip is in the detent on the quick connect coupling.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose.

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the quick release coupling.
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the spring clip and remove the coolant bypass T assembly from the engine.
- Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose assembly. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the coolant hose quick release couplings.

- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector.
- Detach the engine wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the nut and the ground wire eyelet.
- Remove the following items:
- Accessory drive belt. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
- Accessory drive belt tensioner. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
- A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
- A/C compressor belt tensioner. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt Tensioner .

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the thermostat (housing), the coolant pump and thermostat (housing) can be removed as an assembly.
Coolant pump. Refer to: Coolant Pump .
- Crankshaft front seal. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .
- LH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover LH .
- RH valve cover. Refer to: Valve Cover RH .
- Remove the bolts and position the generator aside.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the fasteners and the underbody shield.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

NOTE: If equipped.
Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

- Detach the coolant tube retainer.
- Remove the nut and position the coolant tube and bracket aside.

- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer.
- Remove the pin-type retainer.

- Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.
- Remove the bolts and position the A/C compressor aside.
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
- Remove the engine front cover-to-oil filter adapter bolt.
- Using a 10 mm Hex Bit loosen the engine front cover-to-oil filter adapter jack screw.
- Remove the fasteners.

NOTE: There are 3 different fasteners used, note the location of fasteners for assembly.
Remove the bolts and stud bolts.
- Remove the engine front cover from the front cover-to-cylinder block dowels.
- Remove and discard the gaskets.
- Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
