Camshaft and Carrier Assembly: Assembly

Left hand camshaft and carrier assembly 

    1. Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil.
    2. Install the intake and exhaust camshafts in the neutral position. Align the D-slots as shown in the illustration.

  1. NOTE: Do not tighten at this time.

    Install the camshaft bearing caps and the bolts.

  2. NOTE: Do not tighten at this time.

    Install the front camshaft bearing mega cap and the bolts.

  3. Tighten the bolts in sequence.

    Torque:Stage 1: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    Stage 2: 45 deg.

  4. Install new VCT system oil filter into the camshaft.

  5. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

  6. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be in the position shown.

  7. NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the exhaust camshaft slightly (using a wrench on the flats of the camshaft) to seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    Rotate the secondary timing chain tensioner clockwise 45 degrees so the ramped area is facing forward and fully seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    • If the secondary timing chain is not centered over the tensioner, reposition the VCT assemblies until they are fully seated on the camshafts.

  8. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

    1. Install a new exhaust VCT assembly bolt.
    2. Install new intake VCT assembly bolts.

  9. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolt.

    Tighten the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    Torque:Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    Stage 2: Loosen: 360 deg.

    Stage 3: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

    Stage 4: 150 deg.

  10. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolts.

    Tighten the intake VCT assembly bolts.

    Torque:Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    Stage 2: 90 deg.

    Right hand camshaft and carrier assembly 

    1. Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil.
    2. Install the intake and exhaust camshafts in the neutral position. Align the D-slots as shown in the illustration.

  11. NOTE: Do not tighten at this time.

    Install the camshaft bearing caps and the bolts.

  13. Tighten the bolts in sequence.

    Torque:Stage 1: Bolts 1-23: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    Stage 2: Bolts 1-2, 5-6, 9-23: 45 deg. Bolts 3-4, 7-8: 90 deg.

  14. Install a new VCT system oil filter into the camshaft.

  15. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the colored link.

  16. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be in the position shown.

  17. NOTE: It may be necessary to rotate the exhaust camshaft slightly (using a wrench on the flats of the camshaft) to seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    Rotate the secondary timing chain tensioner counterclockwise 45 degrees so the ramped area is facing forward and fully seat the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts.

    • If the secondary timing chain is not centered over the tensioner, reposition the VCT assemblies until they are fully seated on the camshafts.

  18. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts at this time.

    • Install a new exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    • Install new intake VCT assembly bolts.

  19. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolt.

    Tighten the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

    Torque:Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  21. NOTE: The camshaft cap covers 2 of the camshaft and carrier assembly mount bolt holes and must be removed to install the assembly on the engine.

    Remove the bolts and the camshaft cap.
