- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 3.5L EcoBoost (BM) .

- Remove the engine appearance cover retainers.
- Release the engine appearance cover from the rear and remove the engine appearance cover.
-
- If equipped, remove the bolts.
- Release the retainer and remove the transmission housing cover.
-
NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.
- If equipped, remove the pin-type retainers.
- Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.
-
NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.
If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.
- Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)
- Remove and discard the oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Remove the starter motor bolt and position the ground wire.
- Open the starter motor solenoid battery cable cover.
-
- Remove the nut and disconnect the starter motor solenoid battery cable.
- Remove the nut and disconnect the starter motor solenoid control wire.
- Remove the bolt and the starter motor.
- Remove the fasteners and position the wiring harness aside.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors and wire retainer.
- Remove the body. Refer to: Body .
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 24. Remove the pin-type retainer a position the fuel supply tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Remove the pin-type retainer a position the vapor aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Loosen the clamps and remove the CAC -to-TB (throttle body) pipe.
- Disconnect the air bypass tube assembly from the CAC. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Disconnect the PCV pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 4. Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect coupling and position from the valve cover. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Cut the housing above the lock tabs.
- Cut the housing arm retainer.
- Remove the housing and retainer from the valve cover spigot. Discard the PCV tube.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 4. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Loosen the clamp at the LHTC.
- Disconnect the LHTC inlet tube from the grommet and remove the inlet tube.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Disconnect the electrical connector, disconnect the coupling and remove the fuel vapor purge valve. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Loosen the clamp at theRHTC.
- Disconnect the RHTC inlet tube from the grommet and remove the inlet tube.
- Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the RHTC outlet tube from the bracket grommet and remove the RHTC outlet tube.

- Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the LHTC outlet tube from the bracket grommet and remove the LHTC outlet tube.
-
- Disconnect the hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 8. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Release the clamps and remove the heater hoses.
- Disconnect the coolant hoses and remove. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the coolant hose, release the clip and position aside. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the coolant hoses and remove. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the coolant hose and position aside.
- Remove the nut and position out the transmission cooler tube bracket.
- Position out the engine wiring harness.
- Disconnect the generator wiring harness from the engine front cover.
- If equipped
- Disconnect the block heater electrical connector and the wire harness retainer.
- Disconnect the wire harness retainer from the coolant hose.
- Engine equipped with dual generator. Rotate the A/C compressor belt tensioner clockwise and remove the belt.

NOTE: Engine equipped with single generator.
Remove the A/C compressor belt.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise and feed the stretchy belt tool on to the A/C compressor pulley approximately 180°.
- Fold the stretchy belt tool under the inside of theA/C compressor belt as shown.

NOTE: NOTE: After using the stretchy belt removal tool, it may be necessary to rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise to remove theA/C compressor belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
In one quick motion, firmly pull the stretchy belt tool and remove the A/C compressor belt.
- Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
-
- Disconnect the secondary latch and position out of the way.
- Disconnect the spring lock coupling and then disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump supply line. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.
Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet.
- Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the pin-type retainers.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the wire harness retainer.

- Position back the boot and remove the generator nut.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
-
- Disconnect the oil pressure sensor.
- Release the wire from the shield.
- Remove the wire retainer.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the pin-type retainers.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors, detach the pin-type retainers and remove the ground wire studs.
- Disconnect the RHTC electrical connector.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors, detach the pin-type retainers and remove the wire harness.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the PCV tube. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings
.

- Remove the bolt and position the A/C bracket aside.
- Remove the nuts and the CAC support.
- Remove the nut, bolt and the generator.
- Remove the generator stud bolt.
-
NOTE: The exhaust manifold heat shield provides critical protection for dual generator-equipped engines. If removed, it must be properly reinstalled.
Engines equipped with dual generators. Remove the bolts and the exhaust manifold heat shield.
- Remove the end nut from the EGR tube to exhaust manifold connector.
- Remove the EGR cooler bracket and intake bolt.
- Remove the bolts and the EGR cooler.
- Remove and discard the EGR to exhaust manifold connector.
- Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.
- Remove the bolts and the intake manifold.
- Inspect the gaskets for nicks, cuts and abrasions. If these conditions are not present, the gasket may be re-used.

NOTE: This step only necessary if there are any nicks, cuts or abrasions present.
- Discard the gaskets if any nicks, cuts or abrasions are present after inspection.
- Clean and inspect all of the sealing surfaces of the cylinder heads and the intake manifold.
- Remove the nut, bolt and the generator.
- Remove the generator stud bolt.
- Remove the coolant hose, bolts and the cabin heater coolant pump.
- Remove the bolts and the tensioner.
- Release the clamp, remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.
- Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.

- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
- Discard the bolt.
- Using a three leg puller, remove the crankshaft pulley. Use the General Equipment: Three Leg Puller
- Using the special tool, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-409 (T92C-6700-CH) Remover, Crankshaft Seal.
- Remove the bolt and the LH idler pulley.
- Remove the bolt and the RH idler pulley.
- Remove the nuts and the CAC tube bracket. Remove the dipstick.

NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal.
- Remove the bolts and the ignition coil-on-plugs.
- Remove the bolts and the CMP sensors.
- Inspect the coil seals for rips, nicks or tears.
-
NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.
Loosen the fasteners and remove the LH valve cover.
- Remove and discard the gaskets.

NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.
Loosen the fasteners and remove the RH valve cover.
- Remove and discard the gaskets.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.NOTE: Inspect the VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.
Using the special tools, remove and discard the damaged seal(s). Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.NOTE: Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.
Using the special tools, remove and discard the damaged seal(s). Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.
- Remove the bolts.
- Using a pry tool, locate the 5 pry pads shown and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard the oil pump electrical connector seal. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone.

- Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
All vehicles
- Remove and discard the right turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.
- Remove the RHTC oil supply tube bolts, then remove and discard the TC oil supply tube.
- Remove and discard the turbocharger fitting and oil filter assembly from the engine block.
- Remove the RHTC oil return tube bolts, then remove and discard the TC oil return tube.
- Remove the TC coolant supply tube bolt, then disconnect the TC coolant supply tube.
- Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.
-
- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
- Position the crankshaft sprocket keyway at the 11 o'clock position.
- Verify the timing marks on the VCT units are at the positions shown.
-
NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position.
Install Special Service Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.
- Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain guide.
- Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the RH timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the RH timing chain.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove and discard the RHVCT unit bolts.
- Remove the RHVCT.
- Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.

NOTE: The front camshaft bearing mega cap must be removed first and then the remaining camshaft bearing caps. Failure to follow this direction may result in damage to the engine.
Remove the bolts and the front camshaft bearing mega cap.
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the intake and exhaust camshaft.
-
- Mark the location of the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies before removal.
- Remove the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies.
- Inspect the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies for damage. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.
- Remove the bolts and the fuel rails.
- Remove and discard the fuel rail-to-fuel rail high-pressure tube.
- Remove and discard the RH M6 bolt.

NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surfaceNOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
- Remove and discard the bolts from the RH cylinder head.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove and discard the RH cylinder head gasket.
-
NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging.
Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

- Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
