NOTE: During the removal or installation of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings and tubes/fittings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove caps, tape and other protective materials prior to installation.
NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body cannot be removed, refer to Cylinder Head LH in the Removal and Installation.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 3.5L EcoBoost (BM) .
    • Remove the engine appearance cover retainers.

    • Release the engine appearance cover from the rear and remove the engine appearance cover.

    • If equipped, remove the bolts.

    • Release the retainer and remove the transmission housing cover.

  4. NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.

    1. Disconnect the PCV pressure sensor electrical connector.
    2. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 4. Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect coupling and position from the valve cover. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    3. Cut the housing above the lock tabs.
    4. Cut the housing arm retainer.
    5. Remove the housing and retainer from the valve cover spigot. Discard the PCV tube.

    • Disconnect the block heater electrical connector and the wire harness retainer.

    • Disconnect the wire harness retainer from the coolant hose.

  31. If equipped with dual generator. Rotate the A/C compressor belt tensioner clockwise and remove the belt.

  32. NOTE: Engine equipped with single generator.

    Remove the A/C compressor belt.

    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise and feed the stretchy belt tool on to the A/C compressor pulley approximately 180°.
    2. Fold the stretchy belt tool under the inside of theA/C compressor belt as shown.
    3. NOTE: NOTE: After using the stretchy belt removal tool, it may be necessary to rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise to remove theA/C compressor belt from the A/C compressor pulley.

      In one quick motion, firmly pull the stretchy belt tool and remove the A/C compressor belt.

  33. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

  34. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

    1. Disconnect the secondary latch and position out of the way.
    2. Disconnect the spring lock coupling and then disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump supply line. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  35. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

  36. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  39. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.

    1. Mark the location of the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies before removal.
    2. Remove the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies.
    3. Inspect the clipped roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies for damage. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.

  111. NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
    NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface
    NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

    • Remove and discard the bolts from the LH cylinder head.

    • Remove the cylinder head.

  113. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
    NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  114. Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
