NOTE:
It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body can be removed, refer to Engine - Body Off in this information.
4x2/4x4
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
- Remove the cooling module. Refer to: Cooling Module .
- Remove the A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
- Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
- If equipped, remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.
- If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

- Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
- Remove the pin-type retainer from the oil pan and position the wiring harness aside.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor wiring harness electrical connectors and the retainer.

- Release the clamp and remove coolant hose from thermostat housing. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the clip and remove the coolant hose from the degas bottle.
- Release the clamps and remove the upper and lower radiator hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the transmission cooler coolant hose.
- Release the clamps and remove the coolant hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the coolant pump coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose from the cabin heater coolant pump. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Remove the nut and position out the transmission cooler tube bracket and the engine wiring harness aside.
- Detach the generator wiring harness from the engine front cover.

- Disconnect the A/C line from compressor.
- Discard the O-ring seal.
- Make sure that all openings are sealed.

- Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube.
- Discard the O-ring seal.
- Make sure that all openings are sealed.
- Remove the nut from the RH valve cover stud bolt and position the ground strap aside.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 16. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the EGR valve. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling
.
- Remove the generator. Refer to: Generator - 3.3L Duratec-V6 .
- Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the oil filter adapter.
- Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to: Upper Intake Manifold .
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the PCV tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve wiring harness electrical connector.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 1. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 10. Disconnect the quick release coupling and position the fuel supply tube aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 2. Disconnect the quick release couplings and remove the high-pressure fuel pump to port injection fuel rail tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

- Disconnect the center PCM electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
- Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector and position the engine wiring harness on the engine.
- Detach the transmission wiring harness retainer from the back of the RH valve cover stud bolt.
- Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the heater hose from the lower intake manifold at the rear of the engine. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

- Remove the nut, retainer and the ground strap from the cowl.

- Detach the coolant tube retainer from the transmission.
- Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.
4x4
- Remove the bolts and the LH heat shield.
- Remove the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .
- Detach the transfer case vent tube retainer and position aside.
4x2/4x4
- Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
Torque: 19 lb.ft (26 Nm)
- Remove and discard the oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

- Using brake cleaner, clean the drain trough. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

- Wipe the drain trough clean.
- Using brake cleaner, clean the drain trough. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

- Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.
Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

- Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

- Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
-
- Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.
Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, studs or damage to the engine mount can occur.NOTE: The engine mount stud may come off with the nuts.
- Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.
- Remove the RH engine mount studs.
- Remove the engine-to-transmission bolts.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolt.

NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.NOTE: 4x4 shown, 4x2 similar.
Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.

NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.
Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- Remove the LH transmission-to-engine bolt.
- Install chains to the engine lift eyes.

NOTE: After removing the bolts leave the LH engine mount in place.
Remove and discard the bolts for the LH engine mount.

NOTE: It may be necessary to install a ratchet strap from the front of engine to the chain to keep the engine level.
Using the floor crane and chain, raise the engine for clearance to remove the LH engine mount. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
- Remove the LH engine mount.
- Detach the generator wiring harness retainer from the lower LH side of the engine block.
- Using the floor crane and chain, remove the engine.
