Engine - Body Off

NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body cannot be removed, refer to Engine - Body On in this information.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. If equipped, remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

  6. NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.

    • If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

    • If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

  8. Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Torque: 19 lb.ft (26 Nm)

  9. Remove and discard the oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    1. Using brake cleaner, clean the drain trough. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

      Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. Wipe the drain trough clean.

  10. Remove the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
  11. Remove the pin-type retainer from the oil pan and position the wiring harness aside.

  12. Disconnect the A/C compressor wiring harness electrical connectors and the retainer.

    • Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    • Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    • Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

  13. Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

    • Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

    • NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

      Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    • Detach the coolant tube retainer from the transmission.

    • Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.

  14. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  15. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, studs or damage to the engine mount can occur.
    NOTE: The engine mount stud may come off with the nuts.

    • Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the RH engine mount studs.

  19. Remove the body. Refer to: Body .
    • Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the transmission cooler coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Release the clamps and remove the coolant hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  20. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing and hoses.

  21. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.

    • Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the coolant pump coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose from the cabin heater coolant pump. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  22. Remove and discard the thermostat housing O-ring seal.

    • Remove the nut and position out the transmission cooler tube bracket and the engine wiring harness aside.

    • Detach the generator wiring harness from the engine front cover.

  23. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 16. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the EGR valve. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  24. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the heater hose from the lower intake manifold at the rear of the engine. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  25. Detach the transmission wiring harness retainer from the back of the RH valve cover stud bolt.

    • Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

    • Position the B+ wire protective cover, remove the nut and position the B+ wire aside.

    1. Remove the generator stud nut.
    2. Remove the generator stud.
    3. Remove the bolt and the generator.

  28. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to: Upper Intake Manifold .
    • Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 1. Disconnect the quick release coupling and remove the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  29. Remove the nut from the RH valve cover stud bolt and position the ground strap aside.

  30. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the PCV tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 10. Disconnect the quick release coupling and position the fuel supply tube aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 2. Disconnect the quick release couplings and remove the high-pressure fuel pump to port injection fuel rail tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening or tightening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

  32. NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  33. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount bolts.

    • Install the floor crane. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane

    • Install a ratchet strap from the front of engine to the chain to keep the engine level.

    • Using the floor crane and chain, raise the engine for clearance to remove the LH engine mount. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
