Oil Pan: Installation

NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
  1. Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft engine front cover-to-cylinder block joint areas.

  2. NOTE: The oil pan and the specified bolts must be installed and the oil pan aligned to the cylinder block within 4 minutes of sealant application. Final tightening of the oil pan bolts must be carried out within 60 minutes of sealant application.

    Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone on the chamfer, as shown.

  3. NOTE: The oil pan and the specified bolts must be installed and the oil pan aligned to the cylinder block within 4 minutes of sealant application. Final tightening of the oil pan bolts must be carried out within 60 minutes of sealant application.

    Apply a 9 mm (0.35 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the 2 crankshaft seal retainer plate-to-cylinder block joint areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan.

  4. NOTE: The oil pan and the specified bolts must be installed within 4 minutes of the start of sealant application.
    NOTE: Keep the oil pan as close as possible to the transmission while installing, then slide forward towards the engine front cover to prevent wiping off of the sealant.

    Install the oil pan and the bolts finger tight.

  5. NOTE: Do not torque at this time.

    Draw the transmission and engine together using the bolts.

  9. Install the remaining oil pan bolts and tighten in sequence.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten bolts 1-9 and 11-14 to: 177 lb.in (20 Nm); Stage 2: Tighten bolts 1-9 and 11-14 an additional: 45 deg.; Stage 3: Tighten bolt 10 to: 177 lb.in (20 Nm); Stage 4: Tighten bolt 10 an additional: 90 deg.; Stage 5: Tighten bolts 15 and 16 to: 89 lb.in (10 Nm); Stage 6: Tighten bolts 15 and 16 an additional: 45 deg.

  10. Tighten the engine front cover bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  11. Tighten the oil pan and bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    • Remove and discard the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

    • Install new transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

      Torque: 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

  13. Attach the generator wiring harness retainer to the engine block.

  14. NOTE: Use care when positioning the front axle housing or the vacuum lines to the axle solenoid may become disconnected or damaged.

    Using an adjustable stand, raise the front axle carrier into position. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  15. NOTE: It may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when installing the bolt.

    Install the new upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt finger tight.

  17. Install the new lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.

    Torque: 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

  18. Tighten the axle shaft housing carrier bushing bolt.

  20. Remove the adjustable stand. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  21. Install the steering gear boot.

    1. Position back the steering column shaft U-joint to the steering gear.
    2. WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Install a new steering column shaft bolt.

      Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  22. Remove the holding device from the steering wheel.

    4x2/4x4 

    • Position the coolant tubes and install the nut.

      Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

    • Attach the coolant tube retainer to the transmission.

  23. Position the stabilizer bar and install the new nuts.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  24. Install the crossmember and the nuts and bolts.

    Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  25. Attach the generator wiring harness to the engine front cover.

  26. Position back the engine wire harness, transmission cooler tube bracket and install the nut.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  27. Position the wiring harness and install the wiring harness retainer in the oil pan.

  28. Install the starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    • Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil and install and tighten in 2 stages.

    • Stage 1: Install to initial gasket contact.

    • Stage 2: Tighten 3/4 to 1 turn.

  29. Tighten the upper bell housing-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  30. If equipped, install the skid plate and the bolts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    • If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    • If equipped, install the underbody shield and bolts.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  31. If equipped, install the transmission housing cover and the bolts

    Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)
