Transmission - 3.3L Duratec-V6: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the starter motor assembly. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    2. Remove the transmission fluid heat exchanger. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Heat Exchanger .
    3. Remove the rear driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  3. Remove the retainers and heatshield.
  4. Remove the front driveshaft assembly. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .

  5. Remove the bolt and the LH isolator cap.

  6. Remove and discard the RH and LH transmission support insulator bolts (W718353).

  7. Using an adjustable stand and a wooden block, raise the rear of the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle StandsUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  8. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
    NOTE: Note the location of the bolts and studbolts for assembly.

    Remove the bolts and the transmission fluid pan.

  9. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  10. Remove the retainers and heatshield.

  11. Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts and allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

  12. Position an adjustable stand and a wooden block on the rear of the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Wooden BlockUse the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  13. Remove the bolts and raise the rear of the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Wooden BlockUse the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  14. NOTE: If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
    NOTE: Note the location of the bolts and studbolts for assembly.

    Remove the bolts and the transmission fluid pan.

  15. NOTE: It is not necessary to torque transmission fluid pan bolts at this time.

    Install the transmission fluid pan and the bolts.

    Lower the rear of the transmission and install the bolts. Use the General Equipment: Wooden BlockUse the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  17. Remove the nut and release the retainer, position aside the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  18. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, support the transmission. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  19. Remove the LH catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .
  20. Remove the transmission support insulator. Refer to: Transmission Support Insulator .
  21. Remove the bolts from the catalytic converter flange to the muffler inlet pipe.

  22. Disconnect the electrical connectors and detach the wire clips.

  23. NOTE: Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.

    Remove and discard the catalytic converter nuts and remove the catalytic converter. Discard the gasket.

  24. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt and push pin retainer.

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  25. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt and push pin retainer, disconnect the transfer case vent tube.

    1. Disconnect the transfer case electrical connector.
    2. Remove the wiring harness retainer and position aside.

    All vehicles 

  27. NOTE: Do not pull on the wire harness to disconnect the electrical connector or damage to the electrical connector will occur.

    1. Slide the lock tab.
    2. Rotate lever to disconnect the transmission electrical connector.
    3. Detach the retainer from the transmission.
    4. Remove the bolt and position aside the wiring harness.

  28. Remove the pin-type retainers and the access cover.

  29. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    1. Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.
    2. Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

  30. Remove the lower bellhousing bolt.

  34. Slide the transmission back enough to install the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  35. Using the high-lift transmission jack, remove the transmission from the vehicle. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

    1. Make sure the transmission is securely fastened to the transmission jack.
    2. Slide the transmission towards the rear of the vehicle.
    3. Tilt the front of the transmission down.
    4. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

  37. If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, remove and discard the bolts and separate the transfer case from the transmission.

    All vehicles 

  38. NOTE: Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler tubes can result in transmission failure.

    If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out the transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning procedure. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Cooler - Backflushing and Cleaning - Vehicles With: Transmission Fluid Heat Exchanger .
