Turbocharger LH: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
  2. If the turbocharger coolant supply tube was removed from the turbocharger, then install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the new O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to: Specifications .

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

      Material

      : Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. If removed, install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  3. If removed, install and tighten the turbocharger mounting studs.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  4. Install the new turbocharger gasket.

  5. Install a new O-ring seal. Lubricate the new O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to: Specifications .

    1. NOTE: Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to engine O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

      Material

      : Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    2. Install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the engine block while installing the turbocharger. Loosely install the turbocharger retainers. Tighten the turbocharger retainers in the following 3 stages, in the sequence shown.

      Torque: Tighten 1 to : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) Tighten 2 to : 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Tighten 3 to : 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Tighten 1 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm) Tighten 2 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm) Tighten 3 to : 27 lb.ft (37 Nm) Re-tighten 1 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm) Re-tighten 2 to : 44 lb.ft (60 Nm) Re-tighten 3 to : 27 lb.ft (37 Nm)

  6. Install and tighten the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  7. Install the new turbocharger oil return tube-to-engine block gasket.

  8. Install a new O-ring seal, then lubricate with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

    2. Install the turbocharger oil return tube, then install and tighten the turbocharger oil return tube bolts.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  9. NOTE: A new turbocharger oil supply tube filter must be installed. Failure to install a new filter will cause turbocharger failure.

    Install the new O-ring seals and the new turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter. Lubricate the new O-ring seals with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

      Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore and the turbocharger tube to engine O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. Install new components as needed.

    2. Install the turbocharger oil supply tube, then loosely install the bolt.

  10. Connect the turbocharger oil supply tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  11. Tighten the turbocharger oil supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  12. Install the new EGR tube gaskets.

  13. Install the EGR tube, then install and tighten the EGR tube retainers.

    Torque: Tighten the nuts to : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) Tighten the bolts to : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  14. Install the air tube bracket, then install and the air tube bracket retainers.

    Torque: Nut : 53 lb.in (6 Nm) Bolt : 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

  15. Connect the electrical connector, then attach the wire harness retainer.

  16. Install a new turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal. Lubricate the new O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to: Specifications .

    2. Install and connect the turbocharger coolant return tube and clamp, then install and tighten the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  17. Install the catalytic converter LH. Refer to: Catalytic Converter LH .
  18. Install the left charge air cooler intake pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
  19. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
  20. Install the left front fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  21. If equipped, the underbody skid plate, then install and tighten the bolts.

    Torque: 1: : 22 lb.ft (30 Nm) 2: : 52 lb.ft (71 Nm)

  22. If equipped, install the engine rear undershield. Refer to: Engine Rear Undershield .
  23. Fill the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  24. Check and top off the engine oil level as needed. Refer to: Specifications .
  25. Start and check for leaks.
  26. Road test the vehicle.
