Pinpoint Test DX: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Engine coolant temperature must be greater than 10°C (50°F) to pass the KOEO self-test and greater than 82°C (180°F) to pass the KOER self-test.

Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.7L for schematic and connector information.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

Refer to the DTC Fault Trigger Conditions.

Voltage values calculated for VREF equals 5 volts. These values may vary by 15% due to sensor and VREF variations.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
PCM P1116:00 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Out Of Self Test Range: No Sub Type Information Sets when the PCM detects the ECT sensor is out of self-test range. The correct range is 0.3 to 3.7 volts. The engine coolant temperature must be greater than 10°C (50°F) to pass the KOEO self-test and greater than 82°C (180°F) to pass the KOER self-test.
PCM P0117:00 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information Sets when PCM detects the ECT sensor signal is less than the self-test minimum. The ECT sensor signal minimum is 121° C (250° F). A concern is present if the ECT (TEMP) PID reading is greater than 121° C (250° F) with the ignition ON engine OFF or during any engine operating mode.
PCM P0118:00 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High: No Sub Type Information Sets when PCM detects the ECT sensor signal is greater than the self-test maximum. The ECT sensor signal maximum is -50° C (-58° F). A concern is present if the ECT (TEMP) PID reading is less than -50° C (-58° F) with the ignition ON engine OFF or during any engine operating mode.
