Engine - Body Off

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body cannot be removed, refer to Engine - Body On In this article.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Remove the engine oil filter and drain the engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
  5. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  6. Remove the following items:

    1. Starter motor. Refer to: Starter Motor .
    2. If equipped, secondary generator. Refer to: Generator - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS) .

  7. Remove the nut and position the coolant tubes aside.

  8. If equipped, remove the front driveshaft. Refer to: Front Driveshaft .
    • Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

    • Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  10. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  11. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the studs.

  14. Remove the body. Refer to: Body .
    1. Unclip the coolant hose.
    2. Loosen the clamp.
    3. Detach the RH air cleaner outlet pipe from the grommet.

    • Remove the RH air cleaner outlet pipe.

    1. Disconnect the TC bypass tube.
    2. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 8. Disconnect the vapor tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    3. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 26. Disconnect the vapor tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    4. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Disconnect the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    5. Loosen the clamp at the turbocharger inlet.
    6. Detach the LH air cleaner outlet pipe from the grommet and remove the pipe.

  17. Rotate the retaining ring counterclockwise 180 degrees and remove the TC bypass tube.

    1. Loosen the CAC outlet pipe clamps.
    2. Remove the CAC outlet pipe.

    1. Loosen the CAC inlet pipe clamps.
    2. Detach the CAC inlet pipe from the grommet and remove the pipe.

    1. Release the clamp and remove the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Disconnect the heater hose quick connector.
    3. Disconnect the coolant hose quick connector.
    4. Release the clamp and remove the radiator coolant hose assembly. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    5. Release the clamp and remove the radiator coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    1. Detach the coolant hose retaining clip,
    2. Release the clamps and remove the coolant hose assembly. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    1. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 5. Disconnect the EGR coolant hose. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Remove the nut and position the coolant tube assembly aside.

    1. Detach the pin-type retainer.
    2. Remove the wiring harness retainer nut and position the wiring harness aside.

  25. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.

    • Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

    • Lift the protective cover, remove the nut and position the harness aside.

  27. Detach the wiring harness retainer located below the generator from the cylinder block.

  29. NOTE: Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine clockwise.

    Remove and discard the torque converter nuts.

    Position the catalytic converters back.

    • Remove and discard the exhaust gaskets.

  33. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    1. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor electrical connector.
    3. Disconnect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
    4. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

    1. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the fuel vapor tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 1. Disconnect the tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    3. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 3. Disconnect the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    • Detach the tube retainer.

    1. Remove the nut.

      Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    2. Release the clamps and remove the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor.

    1. Disconnect the ignition coil-on-plug electrical connector.
    2. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    3. Remove the stud bolt and the ignition coil-on-plug.

      Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

  39. Remove the EGR tube bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Remove the EGR tube nuts.
    2. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.
    3. Detach the engine wiring harness retainer.

    • Remove and discard the gasket.

    • Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.

    1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
    2. Follow directions to release the quick release coupling type 19. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve vapor tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    3. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

  53. NOTE: Do not support the transmission by the fluid pan, failure to follow this instruction may result in serious damage to the transmission.

    Support the bellhousing of the transmission with a suitable floor jack and a block of wood. Use the General Equipment: Trolley JackUse the General Equipment: Wooden Block

  54. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1634 Lift Eyes (2)., 303-1246 Engine Spreader Bar.

  55. NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the height floor jack to support the transmission.

    1. Install a floor crane and a length of chain with connecting links. Use the General Equipment: Floor Crane
    2. Raise the engine assembly and position the engine to the RH side of the chassis.

    Remove and discard the engine mount-to-frame bolts.
